Continuing to examine the qualities that Paul instructs Christians to “put on” in Colossians 3, we consider the matters of “humility” and “meekness,” which our Lord himself demonstrated and which he serves as an example for us.

There is little doubt that Jonah’s story of fleeing from God and getting swallowed by the great fish is a famous one. Yet the story of Jonah also teaches about repentance and God’s love for all people. And in the middle of the story is an example of prayer from which we hope to learn a little bit as we study together this week.

Our study of the apostles continues with a brief review of the previous lesson on the giving of the Holy Spirit, before shifting to a focus of the commission given to the apostles to preach the world, a commission which has been passed on to the rest of the church throughout the generations.

Looking to the example of Jesus, we see how his compassion for individuals moved him to act with kindness toward them, and together we explore ways that we can do the same.

God’s spoke through Hosea to a nation that had left the commandments that he had given to them, and had gone to worship other gods. Israel had forgotten her God. There was no knowledge of God in the land, and that had resulted in transgression, in rejection, and would result in destruction.

As we shift our focus from worldly things to heavenly, as we put on the new man and put off the old, our text turns to some standards which we can follow in our walk with Christ. They are the peace of Christ, the word of Christ, and the name of Christ, and they are all bound together in Colossians 3 by the admonition to be thankful.

There are a number of prophecies about the coming of Jesus, with a number appearing in the book of Zechariah. Among them is a prophecy of his coming to Jerusalem humbly riding on a donkey, the fulfillment of which is recorded in all four gospel accounts. Though it seems the people of Jerusalem weren’t quite ready for all that the coming of the king entailed. And we are left to ask ourselves, will we be ready when he comes again.

Those whom Jesus appointed to be his apostles were given a promise that they would recieve power, which they did, to help them in the work that they were being sent out to do. That power comes from God’s Holy Spirit, who empowered the apostles to great things in the Lord’s name as they preached the gospel in various places.
